The shieldbug Picromerus bidens
This boring looking bug eats poisonous caterpillars and other nasties that the birds can't manage, so I love having it in my garden. It is quite hard to see on twigs, which is where I usually see it. then I move it to my brassicas to eat the cabbage white caterpillars.

I have seen these in my own garden but was always leery of them. They looked nasty. I had no idea what they did but now I have a name and can go read up more on what their habits are and the next time I see them in the garden I can give them a knowing nod of acquaintance.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry. Apparently what I was thinking of is the Stink Bug (Euchistus variolarius)) which looks similar to your Shield bug.
